GLOBALIZATION AND THE GLOBAL SOUTH: BENEFITS AND MAJOR SETBACKS

Abstract

This study explored the multifaceted impact of globalization on development trajectories in the Global South. The ripple effects of globalization have become a source of concern, with particular worry on how it reshapes economies, political systems, and cultures across the global south, thus necessitating this study which employed a comparative case study approach and thematic analysis to examine how these impacts vary across regions. Dependency Theory pioneered by scholars like Raúl Prebisch in 1950 served as the theoretical framework. The study revealed a varied economic impact, with some countries achieving growth and others struggling with dependence on commodities. To maximize benefits and mitigate negative consequences, the study recommendations targeted state policies, culturally sensitive development, and strengthened international agreements.
